Master Class for Investors, by Martin Sosnoff

"Master Class for Investors" takes an in-depth look at the complex interplay between perception and misperception in financial markets and the consequences of misplaced interpretations of hard data. Sosnoff shows how a successful investor copes with market cycles, evaluates financial risk and stock selection. He also talks candidly about how he manages his own portfolio in terms of its conceptual framework and specific investments, and he offers advice for family wealth management, too. A colorful storyteller, Sosnoff's anecdotes highlight his measured money management execution. Learn about fine wine, contemporary art, literature, horses, dogs, even the demise of Venice, all in the name of understanding Sosnoff's art of successful investing. In addition, Sosnoff shares war stories, praise and critiques of a veritable who's who of the business world including: Warren Buffett, Donald Trump, Sam Walton, Michael Milken, George Soros, Steve Wynn, Larry Tisch, Rupert Murdoch, Carl Icahn, Bill Gates, Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan. "Master Class for Investors" goes beyond boardrooms and trading floors to take the reader inside the psyche of one of the shrewdest investors in our time.

Review
"This colorful memoir of a half-century on Wall Street shows that many of the most successful investors conduct detailed research to understand both sides of the corporate balance sheet as well as social, regulatory and economic trends, management skills and capital markets cycles. These and other insights make it a practical, yet entertaining read."

-Michael Milken, Chairman, The Milken Institute

"Martin Sosnoff is a Master standing alone. A Master at connecting the tough lessons of growing up poor in the Bronx as compared to his growing wealth as an investment manager and avant garde collector of modern art and capacious mansions. He is as well a Master of irreverence at the blind spots of Wall Street compared to the reverence he has for the gritty entertaining stories and the painful lessons of his career losing big before winning big."

- Bob Lenzner, contributing editor and columnist for Forbes and bestselling author of The Great Getty.

"It's terrific. Lots of personal anecdotes make it very human, with lots of wisdom."

-Peter May, President, Trian Partners

Fifty years with one of Wall Street's most successful investors
By Michael J. Edelman
There is a particular conceit common to many highly successful people that drives them to write autobiographies celebrating their success and wisdom, and those who are successful in the world of finance are particularly prone to this sort of thing. Martin Sosnoff is not only one of the most successful long-term investors on Wall Street, he's also an interesting person who has led a pretty interesting life, judging by this book. In it, he details his life in financial markets and along the way does a good job of explaining the dynamics underlying many of the more extreme movements in markets of the past half century. Of course, hindsight being 20-20, it's not surprising that Sosnoff's analysis turns out to have been uncannily prescient, at least as presented here, but his investment record does support his claims.

Those who are fascinated by the minutia of Wall Street and the personalities of those who play there will find this to be a fascinating history. Those curious as to how one successful investor made his fortune will be similarly entertained. Those looking for a magic formula for investment success will be a bit disappointed, however, as in the end Sosnoff's advice isn't terribly different from that of great many market fundamentalists with its stress on value and minimizing risk. After 26 chapters of rip roaring financial adventure, chapter twenty seven is entitled "How To Compound Iherited Wealth and Sleep Soundly," and the advice given is distilled into a short list that won't sound unfair to readers of Burton Malikiel's "A Random Walk on Wall Street": Stocks do better than bonds in the long term. Every investment carries some form of risk. Don't try to market time, don't trade securities, and don't hire professionals to trade them for you; instead, buy index finds and hold them. Balance your investment into half equities, and half bonds. That's not particularly sexy advice, but it's good advice. It won't make you rich, but it'll keep you from becoming poor.

Truly a master class!
By boo boo tannenbaum
This book is indeed a master class. Not for the amateur investor but the one who wants to dig deeper and understand Wall Street beyond the numbers and get-rich-quick books. As the Ed Ruscha painting on the cover suggests, there is more than data when it comes to investing. There is a certain art to it too. An art that develops over time and turns into wisdom. There are not only several financial enlightenments in each chapter, but personal ones too. This is not a dry finance book, but one full of color, humor, and a wide range of topics from art to wine to philosophy. The amount of knowledge and insight to be found in this book is unparalleled to any recent book on Wall Street. Highly recommend for those who have been around the block and those getting into the great game.
