In this 1996 Minnesota Book Award winner, Kent Nerburn draws the reader deep into the world of an Indian elder known only as Dan. It’s a world of Indian towns, white roadside cafes, and abandoned roads that swirl with the memories of the Ghost Dance and Sitting Bull. Readers meet vivid characters like Jumbo, a 400-pound mechanic, and Annie, an 80-year-old Lakota woman living in a log cabin. Threading through the book is the story of two men struggling to find a common voice. Neither Wolf nor Dog takes readers to the heart of the Native American experience. As the story unfolds, Dan speaks eloquently on the difference between land and property, the power of silence, and the selling of sacred ceremonies. This edition features a new introduction by the author. “This is a sobering, humbling, cleansing, loving book, one that every American should read.” — Yoga Journal

From Library Journal
Non-Indian theologian and editor Nerburn attempts to "bridge the gap between the world into which I had been born and the world of a people I had grown to know and love" by narrating the fascinating toils and truths of Dan, a 78-year-old Lakota man.

Readers looking for another red-man-departs-wise-words-to-white-man-to-lessen-white- man's-guilt will be disappointed by the tone and content of this work. Realists wanting a truthful, fiery, and, ultimately, cleansing dialogue between Indian and white will definitely want it. Nerburn reluctantly agrees to a meeting with Dan, a Lakota elder who asks him to construct a book from a motley collection of notes, diatribes, and political and social commentaries written over seven decades and kept in an old shoe box. Void of the hypocrisy rampant in many books that have whites adopting the ways of "the great spirit," Nerburn exposes the real truth, which whites are unwilling to face: that in "the hunger to own a piece of the earth, we had destroyed the dreams and families of an entire race." Joined by a dog named Fatback, Dan gives Nerburn the ride of his life as they cross the vast Midwest in Dan's Buick. Along the way, Dan alternates between rage and melancholy, and Nerburn between shame and confusion. Nerburn unintentionally touches nerve after nerve and elicits an almost unbearable flood of anguish and despair. The truth revealed in this book will be difficult for most whites to face, but it is painfully necessary if healing is ever to begin. Kevin Roddy

Okay

This is a narrative of a mans life as well as tid bits in real time. This book had me angry with white people (whom I am a part) for atrocities committed against Native Americans (whom I am a Part). Oh and the Native American who spread their seed to make up my family tree was a male not a female. So take that Dan! Those of you who read the book will understand my meaning. I could really sympathize with Dan, but he also really started to tick me off. How he treated and viewed Nerburn began to irritate me. Especially with the knowledge Dan chose a white woman for his wife and mother of his child. I don't think he should judge all people on the actions of others. Please don't think this is a bash the white man book because I don't see it as that at all. It was interesting and really provoked thought. It is not a novel I will read over and over but I was entertained whilst I read.

wake up & live
By Alan Cherney
Well Good People, What are your chances to meet & learn intimate revelations from an Indian elder? To drive around from site to site, for some important to be revealed purpose, or perhaps without such, but still to extract painful or amusing features that make us alive*make your imagination pertinent & useful.
I am yet another tribal person, but I am writing for you from another Ancient Land. Israel. We are all modern folks, of one sort or another. We need to access our ancient wisdom which we sense within us, yet rarely are we able to taste it fully, unless we are somehow challenged to wake up & live.
this is just a book but since it is our dear elder's life-song story, I suggest you honor & respect it, for if your intent is good, you will feel this book. WE all need to tell our Story. This one is rare. We are Americans. We must fully feel the mistakes of our Founding Fathers from this "other side" of, I say, honorable warrior people, who were crushed. For what: theme parks, vacation trips, strip malls, shopping, entertainment, stock markets, fashion, fast food, & the lowest common denominators of behavior?
Of course this is balanced. America also has high ideals, loving families, dreams & goals. It's your job to find them & live them. I think t his book is worthy & will help you.
Will you be able to walk in beauty, then? Well, make a conscious effort & have patience & endurance. Pick yourself up. Smile into the wind. When you are old, have stories that need to be told. The quality will remain long after we are gone.

Neither Wolf Nor Dog by Kent Nerburn is the first in a series of three books about a Lakota elder named Dan. It is first book which sets up the other two. It includes a lot of Lakota teachings and introduces those who will appear in the series. It includes Nerburn being contacted by Dan to begin the process of transferring Dan's life story, wisdom and stories into book form. Life on the reservation, relationships of various people and the trust and lack of trust between the Indians and whites were illustrated.
I was familiar with many of the Lakota words and lifestyle teachings presented in the book, but still learned a great deal and enjoyed reading a great story. I highly recommend this book as well as the other two in the series. I must emphasize that each book stands on its own and can be read by themselves or part of the series.
