Absolutely indispensible

This book is one of the few books of Shakespearean scholarship that I have read which I find completely, unequivocably indispensible. If you have ever been interested in just how Will Shakespeare does what he does with language, Prof. McDonald's book is the one to read. Thorough but not overlong, it is actually a speedy read.
As for spotchboy, there is absolutely NO evidence for an authorship controversy. This "identity question" was created by bored, insipid people who have a penchant for conspiracy theories. Prof. McDonald ignores that question because there is no issue to discuss, and the book deals with the arts of language. I wish the self-proclaimed "anti-Stratfordians" would realize the arts of scholarship. But it is refreshing to see that even they can realize how great a piece of scholarship this is.

Pardon the pun

There is something rather quaint, nowadays, about focusing on Shakespeare's language. Attending to such things as rhetoric and metre might seem a bit passé. Aware of this, Russ McDonald defends his study of Shakespeare's verbal arts by claiming that language is central to an understanding and appreciation of his work. Refreshingly, he also takes pains to emphasise that the clever use of such language features gives rise to reading pleasure. The process of unlocking metaphors is not arid and academic, in his view, but fundamentally rewarding.

This is by no means the same old guide to Shakespeare's language in new clothing. Although it occasionally elucidates those technical terms so beloved of Greek rhetoricians and Elizabethan theorists, and although it is often in broad agreement with the conventional view of the playwright's development (that alliterative patterns gradually become more subtle, and that end-stopped lines increasingly give way to enjambment, for example), this study presents an illuminating discussion of language, and it enhances and complements recent trends in various disciplines.

Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the chapter on puns: 'Double Talk'. Far from constituting Shakespeare's Achilles heel, as Dr Johnson so famously argued, the much-maligned pun is seen as an integral part of his fascination for doubles - in fact, for 'likeness in difference' in all its manifestations, where puns take their place alongside twins, sets of brothers (Old Hamlet/Claudius; Edgar/Edmund), double plots, parallel circumstances etc. However annoying they might be to some, puns have a function, McDonald argues. Socially, they provide a subversive but safe means for characters to defy their superiors, by deliberately misconstruing and redirecting meaning; politically, and more seriously, wordplay becomes the battlefield on which substitution of meaning anticipates the substitution of monarch; and structurally, they embody what he calls 'the unreliability of the verbal sign'. To MacDonald, the pun is nothing less than a trope that allows for intellectual sparring, demonstrates the vulnerability of language and equips Shakespeare with the mental gymnasium he needs in order to exercise his imagination.

A thoroughly convincing and highly readable contribution to the field of Shakespeare's language that extends beyond language and mere labels. For McDonald, 'Words are considerably more than words'. Ideal both for the non-expert (who doesn't mind having obscure meanings glossed in quotations and alliteration highlighted typographically) and for the more serious student. Vital reading.

Serious fun

Good footnotes, well-done index, extensive list of suggested scholarly books on Shakespeare topics, tell you this is a serious book. The discussions of figures, meter, Elizabethan English give you an idea of how deeply McDonald will dig into Shakespeare. But you can easily forget this counts as an "I read a worthy book this week" candidate because it is so enjoyable. Many of us love Shakespeare, but few people write about Shakesepeare's methods so lightly and insightfully. You will come away with some new thoughts and insights and an overpowering urge to go read a few plays again.

In my career, I have had the opportunity to teach many people - mainly IT people - about the natural gas business. It amazes me how many people work in various business groups in our industry and do what they are told by someone without truly understanding the nature of the business they are supporting. Others have worked in their specific area of the business for several years, but do not have an understanding of the processes of the business as a whole. Understanding the business allows everyone to ask the right questions and to interpret the gaps in information in a much more successful manner.

In the last 19 years of my career, since the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) first adopted the standards of the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB) (aka Gas Industry Standards Board (GISB)) as operational standards for the interstate gas industry, I have had the opportunity to teach many people about the standards. I have found that, in many cases, an understanding of the North American natural gas business must be taught first, so that the NAESB standards make sense. This book comes from the heart. I love to teach. I love the natural gas industry. I find it a very interesting industry to be a part of because it incorporates so many different types of people and processes. There's the chemistry side of things - natural gas is methane or CH4, plus a host of secondary components. There's the engineering side with pipelines and flow-control valves. There's the geology side with exploration and drilling. There's the financial side with trading and risk and hedging. My list could go on and on. But really, the gas industry consists of a lot of real people who are trying to make sure that they keep your house warm in the winter and your gas grill working well in the summer. Good people doing a great job.

I based this book on the North American gas business - primarily the business in the United States. It focuses on the transactions and interactions required to transport gas from its point of origin to the burner on your heater or grill. Getting the gas from the well to your burner may require many transactions, many different business parties, and must comply with many regulations in the lifecycle of that gas flow.


One of the fun aspects of the natural gas business is that it is always changing. Technology changes in exploration, production, and transportation create new opportunities, cause market shifts and cause companies to create new services to utilize those shifts. Additionally, the computer-technology changes that are constantly added to the market place create opportunities to see the business in a different way. On top of that, the Federal rules governing the business change, and the NAESB rules to implement the business change. This keeps the industry constantly shifting. It makes being a part of this industry fun. Change is good and a great opportunity to learn.

You need one of these

The Natural Gas Logistics world until now has been a undocumented jungle. Sylvia has as much experience as anyone, and clearly gives her perspective on the history of the industry. Her perspective is from Shippers, Transporters, Regulators and software providers. No matter what your exposure is to Natural Gas, you should pick up a copy of this book as a learning experience as well as a reference manual to technical terms and regulations.

This book is such a great tool for energy industry professionals trying to understand the world of natural gas. I have traded natural gas for 12 years and have not found a better resource to help instruct others less familiar with the concepts in our industry. As the demand for natural gas grows so does the interest of my colleagues. I purchased 3 copies of this book and have spread them around the trade floor. Thanks again!

A thorough treatise on each element of the natural gas transportation business and contractual elements. The Handbook is the only reference I have found that addresses each step in depth, presented in a logical and comprehensible sequence from Contracts/Tariff through Scheduling, Flows and Accounting. A huge help to anyone seeking to understand how gas is transacted between production and end use.

Really fun

It was fun to read. Some of it was sort of dry in places and the humour was sort of over your head types of funny unless you understand about Bollywood and Indian culture. I loved it. Would recommend to friends definitely just have a WiFi connection handy so you can Google up small things. The book is in english but has some hindi phrases and sentences

Not as good as Advanced Selling Strategies.......

I have to admit that I am a big fan of Brian Tracy, have many of his audio and video programs, several books and have been to his seminars. Usually when a new Brian Tracy book or audio program comes out, I invariably buy it.

Such was the case with The Psychology of Selling. This book is 8 chapters and 219 pages. It is a condensed version of his tape program which came out in the 1980's and sold over a million copies.

I have given this book a three instead of a five because I feel that this book is not as deep as Advanced Selling Strategies which Tracy wrote nearly 10 years go. This book, The Psychology of Selling falls somewhere inbetween Advanced Selling Strategies and Be A Sales Superstar, another book written by Tracy back in 2002. My personal favorite Tracy book on sales is Advanced Selling Strategies.

This book should not be confused with the great audio tape program of the same name. That program has far more depth and material than this book.

Nonetheless, The Psychology Of Selling is good reading for a new sales person or for a Tracy fan like myself who merely wants a quick synopsis of some of Tracy's best selling ideas. This book is like an printed abridged version of Tracy's audio program.

I read the whole book in one night. What I got out of it was a reminder of Tracy's best ideas and perhaps a few things that I had forgotten. In that regard, it was a worthwhile investment.

Good book, but being familiar with Tracy, I feel he could have included more meat.

Good book, but I was expecting more!

I have to admit, that when it comes to sales training, my personal favorite is Tom Hopkins with Brian Tracy right behind. Why listen to both? Because I have always believed that you should get training from various qualified sources. Another one of my favorite trainers is James E. Rohn. Mr. Rohn advises to get advice from as many people as possible. When it comes to selling, I am looking for maximum effectiveness. Tracy and Hopkins have walked the walk, have both set sales records along with being great trainers.

Tracy is more into the consultative approach although he uses some of the tried and proven closing techniques that sales professionals use. What impressed me about Tracy is that he speaks from experience having been selling since he was ten years old. He has taught more than 500,000 students in over 500
companies. Like Tom Hopkins, he has walked the walk, talks the talk and is one great trainer as well.

Using the combined advice of Tom Hopkins and Brian Tracy I was able to reach my monthly goal at my last job in only three days.
The first time I used these techniques I moved from next to last place out of 71 sales reps to 3rd out of 75 reps in only one month. This stuff works.

Right now I am using Brian's strategies in my network marketing company. They work very well.

That said, being familiar with Tracy in particular his tape series The Psychology of Selling, I was expecting much more in this book than what is offered. By contrast, Advanced Selling strategies which Tracy wrote over ten years ago was a huge book, packed with information and had more than enough meat.

Nonethless, The Psychology of Selling is a good book, a great primer for new sales people and a great refresher for experienced sales people as well. If you buy this, you will want to add the tape program as well or Advanced Selling Strategies.

Understand the finer aspects of the psychology of succesfull selling.

A good book on developing your sales technique. Worth a read, but be warned that at least 50% of the content is 'old news' that you probably have already read in other sales books.

However, the OTHER 50% is worth reading, and will help you master the little nuances of the sales and closing interview.

A lot of emphasis on the 'behind-the-scenes' aspects of the science of selling - from where the title.
