Loving it!
By Sherry
Well, first thing first, when reading an Harlequin comic, my expectations are never really high: it's generally a ~130 pages long comic book and an adaptation of an existing novel.
But as you must suspect, it's just impossible to enter in too much details in so little pages and in comic form no less.
THAT SAID, I personally enjoy them and have a fun time reading them, and actually own quite a few, some more entertaining than others, some kind of a disappointment...some really good!

This one is definitely one of the best Harlequin comics whether in drawing or story, I was surprised to see there were as many pages as others titles because I felt like I was reading a lot more material. I really love historical romance and this one was wonderful~ It actually made me wanna read the novel version! (but I couldn't find it D:)
I recommend!

Simple and not at all dramatic.
By Amazon Customer
Very simple and not too dramatic. It does make you want to read the actual book. I like it because it was like a preview to what the book would actually be about. I would recommend it to those who just wants to know what the book is about but doesn't have the time to read the whole thing.

A good book and affordable with trade-in credits
By Daniel A. Chavez
This is a required book for a Web business class I am taking. This is the first edition so no older editions at lower prices. Anyway I needed it, so I would have to get it at any price or drop the class, which I don't want to do. Everywhere else had the book for sale for almost $200, which is way too much. Rental was the only option, and Amazon has this one. It is not the lowest price on the market, but I had some Amazon Gift Card credits, which made this rental much more affordable. If you can, try to turn in some of your textbooks and use the credit toward those you need for current courses. It's online book shopping the smart way.
As for the book, I haven't gone all the way through, but so far the authors seem to have extensive knowledge about e-commerce and the internet as a whole. I am certain I will learn a great deal from this book. I think it's a must read for e-commerce students like me and those who want to start and run a successful web business.

Stumbling Colossus: The Red Army on the Eve of World War (Modern War Studies), by David M. Glantz

Germany's surprise attack on June 22, 1941, shocked a Soviet Union woefully unprepared to defend itself. The day before the attack, the Red Army still comprised the world's largest fighting force. But by the end of the year, four and a half million of its soldiers lay dead. This new study, based on formerly classified Soviet archival material and neglected German sources, reveals the truth behind this national catastrophe.

Drawing on evidence never before seen in the West-including combat records of early engagements-David Glantz claims that in 1941 the Red Army was poorly trained, inadequately equipped, ineptly organized, and consequently incapable of engaging in large-scale military campaigns and that both Hitler and Stalin knew it. He provides the most complete and convincing study of why the Soviets almost lost the war that summer, dispelling many of the myths about the Red Army that have persisted since the war and soundly refuting Viktor Suvorov's controversial thesis that Stalin was planning a preemptive strike against Germany.

Stumbling Colossus describes the Red Army's command leadership, mobilization and war planning, intelligence activities, and active and reserve combat formations. It includes the first complete Order of Battle of Soviet forces on the eve of the German attack, documents the strength of Soviet armored forces during the war's initial period, and reproduces the first available texts of actual Soviet war plans. It also provides biographical sketches of Soviet officers and tells how Stalin's purges of the late 1930s left the Red Army leadership almost decimated.

At a time when blame for the war in eastern Europe is being laid with a fallen regime, Glantz's book sets the record straight on the Soviet Union's readiness-and willingness-to fight. Boasting an extensive bibliography of Soviet and German sources, Stumbling Colossus is a convincing study that overshadows recent revisionist history and one that no student of World War II can ignore.

Review
"David Glantz is the world's top scholar of the Soviet-German War." --Journal of Military History

"David Glantz is indisputably the West's foremost expert on the subject." --The Atlantic

From the Back Cover
"This book represents the most thorough and intensive examination of the state of the Red Army in 1941 yet to appear. It investigates every aspect of the Soviet military establishment, command, deployment, mobilization, reserves, the Soviet soldier himself, and above all, combat readiness, using Soviet and German archives. Glantz's evidence is unchallengeable, his sources unimpeachable, his conclusion incontestable."--John Erickson, author of The Road to Stalingrad

"Effectively refutes the charge--recently rehabilitated by Viktor Suvorov in Icebreaker--that Stalin was secretly planning an offensive war against Hitler during 1941. With his previous book When Titans Clashed and this latest contribution, David Glantz has established firmly his reputation as the preeminent historian of the Soviet Army."--Mark von Hagen, author of Soldiers in the Proletarian Dictatorship

"An outstanding contribution and a must for any student of the history of the Red Army and the Soviet Union's role in the Second World War."--Malcolm Mackintosh, author of Juggernaut: A History of Soviet Armed Forces

The first 6 months of War
By Ryan J. Opel
Stumbling Colossus is a examination of the Red Army on the Eve of Operation Barbarossa. The books examines the Red Army and looks at the prepardeness for war and the prepartations being made for action against the Germans. The book looks at the largest army in the world and takes a pentrating look at the flaws in the system. We see why the Soviets were able to survive the disasters of the begining of the war and the causes behind some of these disasters.

The author relies too much on Soviet sources. Need updating.
By A Customer
David Glantz has reproduced a lot of Soviet data to show how ill-prepared the Soviet Red Army was in the face of the German Wehrmacht's invasion of the USSR, June 1941. While his statistics are numerous (from Soviet sources), any analysis of the "political-military" aspects of Stalin policy before June 1941 is absent. To his (Glantz's) mind, any present-day Russian scholar who would dare challenge the conventional view that Stalin pursued only a "defencist" policy vis-a-vis Hitler from the Nazi-Soviet agreements to the June '41 invasion is an "anti-Soviet" bigot, to paraphrase his accusations against these reputable, post-Soviet Russian military historians. But Mr. Glantz himself is the one who is being outpaced by new revelations from Soviet archives. These disclosures indicate that Stalin was planning his own offensive strategy against Hitler (which does not excuse, of course, Operation Barbarossa). Second, in his other books as well, Glantz in his shows his lack of acquaintanceship with NEW, post-Communist historiography. Anyone who would care to update himself/herself on this might see recent issues of the journal TRANSITIONS, which tracks in scholarly manner the latest developments -- and books -- in the former East European bloc, including Russia.

Glantz v Suvorov; neither right nor wrong...
By Philip
Some of my past reviews of Glantz have been unhelpful. I used to agree with Suvorov, now I have a third way.

Glantz is correct. The Red Army in 1941 was woefully badly trained and equipped and in no condition to take on the Wehrmacht. It probably could not have invaded Europe in 1941 without being torn to pieces by the Wehrmacht.

However Suvorov is correct in his general idea that Stalin wanted Europe; he had an espionage and sabotage network second to none to help him, if the Red Army ever got that far. (read 'The Red Orchestra' to find out more about the Soviet spy networks in Germany and Switzerland.)

Stalin wa a chess player. He played chess with lives and territory. He couldn't stop the Wehrmacht invading. What he did was to try to buy time, first with keeping Hitler happy by supplying him with primary resources such as oil, grain, minerals etc. until the last moment. Then he resisted the Wehrmacht by throwing men and machines into the fray to be destroyed. Why? Well he had an 18million man reserve army that the Germans knew nothing about. the Germans really had no idea how big the Soviet military potential really was. Germans did not know about the KV-1 or the T-34.

Stalin knew exactly what the Germans knew about him and what their own situation was because he had spies right in the centre of the German general staff system, the OKW. He knew everything that was going on in Germany and in the Wehrmacht almost before the commanders in the field knew it. In 1941 when he met Roosevelt's aid Hopkins, he was able to tell Hopkins thatthe frontline would stabilise by December around the North to South axis through Moscow. He got the distance right to within about 50 miles. that's how good his information was from his German informants. (information on Hopkins from ' Sunrise at Abadan' by Stewart)

It seems Stalin had decided to trade millions of Red Army lives and large areas of territory in the western Soviet Union in exchange for enormous quantities of lend-lease supplies from America and the UK coming through Iran and Vladivostok. But also he was counting on the fact that the Wehrmacht would gradually wear itself down fighting the Red Army, from July to December. he knew the Wehrmacht was completely unprepared for winter, especially they ferocious Russian winter. He knew if he could draw the Wehrmacht into Russia and into the Russian winter,a bit like the Russians did with Napoleon, he had a good chance of beating it. Stalin knew the Wehrmacht did not have the resources for a long war, or for a slugging match. at the same time the Red Army was learning from the Germans how to fight a modern war, at the cost of millions of lives sacrificed. By the time of Stalingrad, just 16 months into the invasion, the Wehrmacht was truly on it's last legs, as was Hitler, and the Red Army was beginning to look much more like a Soviet version of the Wehrmacht. They had been learning their lessons well.

so much so that from 1944 onwards they really were invading/liberating Europe for the Soviets cause and the communist ideology. They were doing this in a way they couldn't possibly have managed in 1941.

It was thanks to two things that they didn't succeed in getting past Germany. firstly, arguably and controversially, fanatical resistance of the SS divisions slowed down the Red Army advance, together with considerations like weather and logistical problems, so that the Western allies were able to land in Normandy and get to Germany before the Soviets could take the whole of Europe. it was acombination of these circumstances that prevented Stalin in 1945 from completing what he would have liked to have done in 1941 according to Suvorov but did not have the capability to do so. Even the Soviet general Zhukov commented on how the German SS divisions had slowed him downwith their fanatical resistance.

So when it comes down to it, both Glantz and Suvorov are correct, and yet neither seems to have a complete picture. I don't claim to have the complete picture, just a slightly more complete one than either of those two gentlemen.

I would say that Glantz is good to read if you want to know how the Soviet army went from a shambolic mess to the effective war machine that it became, how all that was made possible. I give him three stars for information, but I really can't stand his style, and I still think he is a Soviet/Russian 'patsy'.

Paradox of Plenty: A Social History of Eating in Modern America, by Harvey Levenstein

America has always been blessed with an abundance of food, but when it comes to the national diet, it is a land of stark contrast and paradox. In the early months of the Depression, for instance, there were 82 breadlines in New York City alone, and food riots broke out in such places as Henryetta, Oklahoma, and England, Arkansas. Yet at the same time, among those who were better-off, absurd weight-loss diets were the rage - the Pineapple-and-Lamb-Chop Diet, the "Mayo Diet" of raw tomatoes and hard-boiled eggs, and even a Coffee-and-Donuts Diet. Why do Americans eat what they eat? And why, in a land of plenty, do so many eat so poorly? In Paradox of Plenty, Harvey Levenstein offers a sweeping social history of food and eating in America, exploring the economic, political, and cultural factors that have shaped the American diet from 1930 to the present. Levenstein begins with the Great Depression, describing the breadlines and the slim-down diets, the era's great communal eating fests - the picnics, barbecues, fish fries, and burgoo feasts - and the wave of "vitamania" which swept the nation before World War II, breeding fears that the national diet was deficient in the so-called "morale vitamin." He discusses wartime food rationing and the attempts of Margaret Mead and other social scientists to change American eating habits, and he examines the postwar "Golden Age of American Food Processing, " when Duncan Hines and other industry leaders convinced Americans that they were "the best-fed people on Earth." He depicts the disillusionment of the 1960s, when Americans rediscovered hunger and attacked food processors for denutrifying the food supply, and he shows how President Kennedy helpedrevive the mystique of French food (and how Julia Child helped demystify it). Finally, he discusses contemporary eating habits, the national obsession with dieting, cholesterolphobia, "natural" foods, the demographics of fast-food chains, and the expanding role of food processors

From Publishers Weekly
Smoothly written and full of information, this ambitious history sometimes emphasizes detail at the expense of overarching themes. Levenstein ( Revolution at the Table ) begins with the Great Depression, moving chronologically and alternating between discussions of government policies for hunger-relief and the development of culinary tastes. The author resurrects much valuable material: how thiamine was promoted as the "morale vitamin during WW II"; how Italian-Americans, virtually alone among immigrants, resisted Americanization of their cuisine; how the 1950s were the "Golden Age for American food chemistry"; how the barbecue boom of the 1960s was the first step to men sharing cooking responsibilities; how Mexican food boomed not in the American Southwest but in New York City. Levenstein's discussion of the "plenty" is richer than his account of the "paradox"; a study of poverty food programs could have made a separate book. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
In his lively, entertaining study of America's eating habits from 1930 to the present, Levenstein (history, McMaster Univ.) explores the disturbing existence of hunger in the midst of agricultural abundance. Describing the economic, political, and cultural factors that have influenced the American diet, he exposes the role that major food processors, the medical establishment, and the American government have played in modifying the taste buds and nutritional ideas of its citizens while ignoring the plight of its increasing numbers of malnourished poor. He also examines the national obsession with dieting and the impact on eating habits of married women entering the work force in record numbers. Well written and thoroughly researched, this overview gathers together information that many health and food enthusiasts will find interesting and enlightening.

Review

"Smoothly written and full of information."--Publishers Weekly

"A fascinating account of the economic, political and cultural factors that have been brought to bear on the way Americans have eaten from 1930 to the present."--Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Levenstein's examples and anecdotes of folly and worse, and his debunking of experts and authorities from Margaret Mead on, make lively reading."--Kirkus Reviews

"With intellectual gusto and uncommon equanimity, Harvey Levenstein has done a remarkable job describing what food has meant in America for the last sixty years. His scrupulous account of all the cultural beliefs and biases that flavor how it is manufactures, marketed, cooked, eaten, exalted, damned, and denied transforms this gastronomic history into a tale of epic proportions. If a society is what it eats, Paradox of Plenty is a revealing portrait of a nation that loves and loathes itself, and has good cause to do both."--Jane and Michael Stern

"Lively, entertaining....Well-written and thoroughly researched, this overview gathers together information that many health and food enthusiasts will find interesting and enlightening."--Library Journal

By ed bavoso
The book reviews the trends and changes of food in the USA from a cultural, nutritional, medical, and marketing standpoint in the 20th century.. Although the paragraphs are long and could be condensed, the effort to read this book gave me context as to why the average consumer is confused regarding nutrition and how status even applies to our dietary habits...... even if those habits are detrimental to our health.

What to look for, not what to do.
By CTCraftBrew
Before anyone gets defensive, I think Mike Holmes is one of the greatest living humans on Earth. I love his shows and magazine. I thought I'd love this book- but I was very disappointed.

I guess I expected more. If you are a hands-off homeowner (or future homeowner) who is buying a house or considering hiring a contrator to do a job on your house, this book is for you! This book will help you identify potential problems with your structure or with the people you intend to hire. Mike recommends certain materials and lets you know what to look out for.

Though, that's it. If you watch the show, you already know most of this. But I'm not the kind of guy who farms this stuff out. I do it myself- framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, whatever. I'm certainly not a professional and I'm sure I'm not "doing it (completely) right." I was hoping that this book would show me how to make it right. For example, I'm re-doing my bathroom. There's little to nothing about venting the drain pipes. Yeah, it says that if you have xyz problem, there's an issue with venting. But it doesn't tell you the proper way to vent anything- just to call a pro.

Sorry, Mike. Teach me how to do it, not how to pay someone to do it!

good overview of how to design and contractor selection - not DIY
By wilson
I like Holmes TV shows, so i got this book. this is well written overview of the things to look for in contracting the remodel - i was more interested in the DIY details, but it's not Holmes fault that he wrote the book that he wanted to write rather than the one i wanted to read. Even though it's short on DIY details, it's still an interesting read.

God, Doctor Buzzard, and the Bolito Man: A Saltwater Geechee Talks about Life on Sapelo Island, by Christena Bledsoe, Cornelia Walker Bail

In this beautiful cultural memoir, Sapelo Island native Cornelia Walker Bailey tells the fascinating history of her remarkable and threatened Georgia homeland. Off the coast of Georgia, a small close-knit community of African Americans traces their lineage to enslaved West Africans. Living on a barrier island in almost total isolation, the people of Sapelo have been able to do what most others could not: They have preserved many of the folkways of their forebears in West Africa, believing in "signs and spirits and all kinds of magic."

Cornelia Walker Bailey, a direct descendant of Bilali, the most famous and powerful enslaved African to inhabit the island, is the keeper of cultural secrets and the sage of Sapelo. In words that are poetic and straight to the point, she tells the story of her Sapelo--including the Geechee belief in the equal power of God, "Dr. Buzzard" (voodoo), and the "Bolito Man" (luck).

But her tale is not without peril, for the old folkways are quickly slipping away. The elders are dying, the young must leave the island to go to school and to find work, and the community's ability to live on the land is in jeopardy. The State of Georgia owns nine-tenths of the land and the pressure on the inhabitants is ever-increasing.
Cornelia Walker Bailey is determined to save the community, but time will tell whether the people of Sapelo will be able to retain the land, and the treasured culture which their forebears bestowed upon them more than two hundred years ago.

Amazon.com Review
It has been said that the Africans who were brought to the United States as slaves were completely stripped of their native culture. But pioneering scholars such as anthropologist Melville Herskovits have disproved this in academia, while the literature of Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison has also debunked this persistent myth. Living proof of that fact is Sapelo Island, a South Sea island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, where West African traditions persist despite considerable odds. This vivid memoir by Cornelia Walker Bailey, a lecturer and tour guide on Sapelo Island, transports the reader to this enchanted land of miracles and magic.

Walker is a self-described "Geechee," a descendant of Islamic African slaves taken from modern-day Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Liberia (she traces her family lineage on the island back to 1803). In God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man, the author brings alive a land where black people speak an African-based Creole language, believe in "mojo" (the American equivalent of Haitian voodoo), and who work to keep their culture alive. "You can think of the Africans as being victims, and in a sense they were" she writes. "But they were also great survivors. If they survived the Middle Passage, and a lot of people didn't, then they survived everything thrown at them. They were determined people." Thanks in large part to Bailey, this determination lives on. But her book, which recalls life on Sapelo Island from the 1940s and rings with the same ebullient language found in Jean Toomer's Cane, also serves as a warning, noting that outside business interests and the disinterest of the youth threaten the very existence of their ancient ways. "We need to be proud of our ancestors from slavery days and of our old people who went through modern hardships and to learn from them that if you believe in something, strength comes from that." With this book, she hopes to pass some of that strength on. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Publishers Weekly
In a delightful, sincere memoir, born storyteller Bailey reveals the shadows of a little-known culture that is increasingly threatened by encroaching developers. Her tiny community of "salt water geechees" on Sapelo Island, off the Georgia coast, consists of the survivors of slave families who believe in the power of God, the "root doctor" and the numbers runner, hence the title. Bailey's own family is directly descended from the African Muslim, Bilali (or Bul-Allah), who founded their community. Many of their traditions can be traced to Africa, as Bailey discovered when she traveled there as an adult. Entertaining and mystifying, her reflections on growing up geechee evidence a healthy respect for the supernatural: on Sapelo, the living are seen to coexist with the spirits of the dead; a curse could lead a person to ruin; and every dream is significant. Bailey herself "died" as a child; her coffin was later used to store her mother's linens when she inexplicably recovered. Bailey's most terrifying reflections, however, concentrate upon the days of slavery and the Jim Crow culture that replaced it. In the decades that followed, Bailey's own father was cheated out of the family homestead by a henchman of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds, according to the author. One indelible image is that of her father reknotting his net, as the family sits at the hearth to watch, before he goes night fishing to feed them. In writing that is both unadorned and poetic, Bailey's soft Southern wit shines through, resonating with humor and charm. Readers enthralled by anthropology and African-American life will not want to put this book down. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
With a population under 75 individuals, Sapelo Island has received excellent attention recently as a bastion of African American culture. As a descendant of former slaves who originally populated the island, Bailey gives an extremely personal view of Geechee/Gullah culture, which intertwines remnants of West African belief systems with coastal Georgian influences. Her prose style (with the assistance of author Bledsoe) makes for a memorable read as she explains the intricate relationship between God, "Dr. Buzzard" (voodoo), and the "Bolito Man" (luck) as they clash with modern ways that have lead to the rapid disintegration of this once vibrant community. Bailey's new work is highly recommended as a companion volume to historian William McFeely's "outsider" text, Sapelo's People (LJ 5/1/94) and Julie Dash's film Daughters of the Dust (1991), which also treats the Sea Islands.DAnthony J. Spellbinding in more ways than one.
By A Customer
This book is spellbinding in more ways than one. In this modern era of homogenized mass-market culture, it's refreshing to learn that there are still people in this country who are different and who are rich in ways that have nothing to do with money. It may have taken Cornelia Bailey half her life to discover that she was to be the storyteller of her people, but she's made up for lost time - she seems born to it, as well as being a living encyclopedia of the history and lore of one of the truly unique places and truly distinctive cultures in America. At times her words ring with a cadence and spirituality of a faraway time and setting, but neither are so remote as they first seem. Only All God's Dangers, the National Book Award winning oral history of Alabama sharecropper Nate Shaw, compares in its reduction to writing of the voice of an African-American community and way of life, but the similarity stops there. The map at the front of the book shows her home, Sapelo Island, to be at best only fifteen miles long, but it was (and still is in many respects) a whole universe to its people, and two centuries of isolation led to the development of a culture and language that is more closely tied to Africa than any other in the United States. Through all those years, thanks to their storyteller, we know that the "Saltwater Geechees" made for themselves a fascinating world with one foot on solid ground and the other deep in mysticism. The book is also first-rate social history. The story of Sapelo and its people may be a microcosm of the struggle of African-American people to cope with the ordeal of slavery and the outrages of the Jim Crow era, but it has the added turn of their being subjected to the machinations of Twentieth Century tycoons with dreams of creating feudal baronies on their secluded island. It was a war that has had more than a few casualties, and one that is far from over, with the nabobs being replaced by bureaucrats in khaki shirts and green pants, but you get the feeling that, with people like Cornelia Bailey manning the gates, the Geechees left on Sapelo will see the latest edition of "buckra" off the island like all who came and went before. Along the journey upon which she takes us we discover the beauty, mystery, and tragedy of a place and people that few ever heard of and none will soon forget. But as sobering as much of that trip is, we also get to laugh. A lot. It's clear that Ms. Bailey had a twinkle in her eye and enjoyed relating these tales almost as much as I enjoyed reading them.

A magical book to read and re-read.
By A Customer
Part memoir, part cultural history, part plea on behalf of a fragile culture, God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man is as affecting as the best magic realism. You do not simply read it, you savor it and absorb it into your very soul.
In the book, Cornelia Bailey, resident griot of Sapelo Island off the Georgia coast, spins the story of her growing up in that place and in a time when lives were governed equally by religion, magic, and chance. She admits us deep into the culture of her proud people and introduces us to folkways strong enough to have survived the Middle Passage and the centuries since. So it is with infinite sadness we learn that the forces of progress are rendering these same folkways as fragile as a paper-thin fig shell that washes onto the beach.
It goes without saying that God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man will appeal to cultural historians, anthropologists, naturalists, and environmentalists. The book's strongest appeal, however, will be to lovers of lyrical prose -- and to anyone who delights in the sheer magic of the way words fall on the ear and follow one another on a page.
This is a special book, one that should find a home on every reader's short shelf of well-thumbed volumes that are read and referenced time and again.

Bailey touches the heart with her personal memior
By A Customer
God , Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man carries the reader off into the world where knowing one's history, listening to folktales, and sharing a sense of humor are key to a child's up-bringing on the tiny yet proud Sea Island of Sapelo Island, GA. Cornelia Bailey's voice as a native and oral historian of one of Georgia's Sea Islands is both descriptive and informative for the adult and novice reader. As a young girl Cornelia grasps what it means to be young, old, or an outsider of the U.S. "mainland". She sees firsthand how the elders in her community, often in the midst of confrontation, overcome economic barriers and obstacles. Many hold on to their land after the destruction of the Civil War, but more importantly they hold on to a sense of pride, due to the customs, beliefs, and traditions thier forefathers brought over on the slave ships off the coast of West Africa. Cornelia shares the secrets of her surroundings among family and friends in this heartwarming memior of the Sapelo Island community.
I highly recommend this book to those who know little about American and African-American history,to historians, and also to those who are a fan of the Bre'r Rabbit folktales.
