Doug's consulting assignments have been in leading quality assurance and testing efforts for: data warehousing, BI and Data Mining in financial, insurance and retail industries. Doug holds Masters' Degree in Electronics and Telecommunication and is a member of the Registered Professional Engineers of the province of Ontario. Wayne Yaddow: Wayne Yaddow has spent more than twenty years developing and testing operating system code at IBM. Good basic data warehouse guide

As someone with experience in software development and testing, but new to data warehouse, I am finding this book to be helpful. The information is presented in a way that is easy to understand, and there are a lot of useful examples and checklists. This will be a helpful guide for progressing with my ETL testing. My only issue with this book is the very sloppy editing, which becomes very distracting at times. I deducted 1 star for that.

Not worth your time

Clearly an improvement over the previous edition _Testing_the_Data_Warehouse_Application_ but still disappointing. The authors describe what you might do without explaining why. This is a serious topic that deserves a better reference.

Several of the examples are very poor. They do little to explain the concepts and the code itself is frighteningly amateur.

Informative and Well-Designed Book and Videos!

As a guitarist for over 20 years, I have seen a lot of scale and music theory books. Each one is pretty good, but is lacking in one area or another. For instance, most guitar scale books don't provide the finger numbers or the notes on the guitar neck. Many of them also provide scale patterns that are difficult for the hands to learn and are not practical. Almost all scales books that I've seen don't tell you what chords to play the scales over; they just list scale patterns.

The author of this book has done a very good job in making learning scales easy, fun, and musical. Here are 10 features that make it a little "gem":

1. The book begins with easy-to-play scales and progresses to expert-level techniques.
2. It is designed in a lesson-based format. Each page builds on the previous one and is well organized.
3. The information provided is very clear. The lessons are not overloaded with useless, filler material.
4. There are play-along videos to help you get a feel for how the scales work in real music.
5. A huge amount of scales are presented that can be used in many different styles and genres.
6. The fingerings are great and easy to learn.

7. The price is very reasonable.
8. It easily fits in a guitar case or gig bag.
9. It teaches music theory.

I bought this book right after "Guitar Adventures" from the same author Damon Ferrante. I was so pleased with the first one so I decided to give this one a try and I was happy to find again the same features I loved about Ferrante's teaching style. The lessons are very clear, the theory is explained in a very simple way, without taking anything for granted (wich is great for a beginner as I am) and, last but not least, the play along videos are very, very helpful. Get these books, you won't regret it!

Great review for experienced musician

I have a pretty extensive background in music. I have been singing for as long as I can remember in choirs and plays etc. I have also been playing the viola and the flute since elementary school! I have had numerous hours of training in reading and playing music. The guitar has always been an instrument that I have wanted to play. However, I am not one that can afford lessons... That being said, this book is PERFECT for someone like me. Even with my background as a musician, the detailed lessons are a great review for me as well as a clarification for some things. The book is easy to follow and the addition of picture visuals and video tutorials make it that much easier. My favorite addition is the play alongs at the end of the lesson that allow you to apply techniques and scale work. This is a great book and I am so excited to put it to great use!!

Very Nicely Done

Slydini has long been considered a magicians magician, if you've ever watched him you will understand why. Using simple props he allows a person to believe in magic. Now you have the opportunity to learn the best of his effects in one well written book.

Other texts that I have studied on Slydini have been somewhat difficult to understand and the nuances needed to make the magic happen were next to impossible to capture without watching and re-watching him perform on old video footage.. Here you will find the finer details described in the masters own words, the how's and whys and the importance of timing. I was impressed by the amount of beautiful photographs used to instruct a person through every phase of a routine.

The book contains the best of Slydini's effects and will prove to be a text if studied and practiced, that will elevate your abilities as a magician tremendously. I look at it like this, a person could spend the same amount as the cost of this book and purchase one effect -or- purchase this book, put in some hard work and walk away with a number of finely orchestrated routines.

Slydini makes it look like magic all over again...here he gives you personal instruction to do the same.

Arguably the best book of short stories published in 2001, The Complete Works of Isaac Babel, expertly translated by Peter Constantine, should affirm Babel's place among the top Russian short story writers. Like Chekhov, Isaac Babel primarily wrote odd, tightly wrung little stories in which he displays a variety of convincing styles and tones, with each piece having an immediacy and weight that exceeds its brevity.

Babel's writing life lasted approximately 20 years. (He was executed by Stalin after a few military subjects unflatteringly portrayed in his "Red Cavalry" stories gained positions of influence.) His most notable stories depict the Russian civil war and Jewish soldiers, his childhood, and Jewish thugs in his native Odessa. Often journalistic in style, his stories provided gripping war accounts to Russians eager for news from the front, as in this passage from "The Church in Novograd": We drank rum, waiting for the military commissar, but he still hadn't come back from the headquarters. Romuald had collapsed in a corner and fallen asleep. He slept and quivered, while beyond the window an alley seeped into the garden beneath the black passion of the sky. Thirsting roses swayed in the darkness. Green lightning bolts blazed over the cupolas. A naked corpse lay on the embankment. One of the great Russian writers of the 20th century, Babel (1894-1941) was arrested in 1939 and later executed by Stalin's regime. In 1954, his work was largely republished, but much of his correspondence, drafts, and manuscripts was confiscated when he was arrested and has never resurfaced. Now, for the first time, all of Babel's surviving work has been assembled into one volume. Readers new to Babel will discover his "Red Cavalry" stories, plays, diaries, screenplays, and short stories. In addition to an introduction by Cynthia Ozick, the book is graced with an excellent preface and afterword by Babel's daughter, who also edited the volume. Isaac Babel's works should be read and re-read and re-re-read. At his best, Babel can write such short, simple-appearing sentences that contain a complexity of thoughts that stuns. At his worst, for example the purely propagandistic "blurbs." he is still interesting but less mind-grabbing. It's no wonder Stalin had him shot. Babel would have caused people to think, an always dangerous thing in a totalitarian state. If you like to think and like good writing, The Complete Works are worth a look.

Like Finding A Secret Treasure

I bought this book after stumbling upon one of Babel's army stories from the "Red Cavalry" collection. Babel truly is a master of short fiction. I am surprised that I have gone this far in my life and have just now found him.
The biographical information provided by his daughter enhances the reading pleasure as well as draws attention to the politics that contributed to self-censorship and eventual assassination from Stalin's henchmen.
Babel is the Checkov and the Turgenev of his time: classic Russian Short Fiction at its most beautiful.
The only drawback to this extensive collection is its extensiveness. Babel's longer works and plays lack some of the focus and integrity of his short stories. Luckily the short stories make up the bulk of the book.
If you can afford it buy the hardcover. It comes in a protective box and I guarantee this is a collection you will want to preserve and cherish forever.

It's Certainly Not Babble

If you have not read Babel, you should. This is a beautiful addition to your library and, as advertised, contains the complete works. Why would you want the complete works? Once your appetite is whet by Red Cavalry, you'll want more. Thus, you might as well buy it in this attractively boxed set.

The writing? Gritty and gut wrenching. And unlike the western modernists, easy to understand. No interpretation required. Straight gut punches.

My wife and I were blown away by this book. Beautifully illustrated. And each of the 24 pages provide simple topics for age-appropriate life-lessons. Non-political and inclusive of all Gods children. Mr. James and Mr. Bill have given us a wonderful Christmas story to share with our kids and grandkids.

Stunning illustrations, and although Bill O'Reilly is a favorite of mine, I was immediately STUNNED by the use of improper grammar - particularly in a book where you are teaching children! I may even use a Sharpie to X out the word "can" when used incorrectly - and write in the word "may" and use it to also teach proper grammar.

Tiny Tina and Hunter play

This story starts on a cruise ship and then the story follows them home.

Age play is a more difficult storyline so gave 4 stars but the development was iffy at times. For instance, they spend some short hours together and immediately she is comfortable asking for a spanking and having immediate sex.
They go home, have dinner, move in with Hunter pretty soon afterwards.
Exploring relationship...now he loves her and she just knows. There is never any declaration. It implies the same feelings for him. But no declaration.
Finally, things happen, all the same few days for both that change the play and dynamics. But no lead in.
So, because it's hard subject matter to write, I gave four, because of the need for better development, I didn't give a five.

I really liked this book, lots of spanking and hot hot times. I love that she could pretend to be a teenager and that they remained so well adjusted in their relationship. They got along great even though there was a more than 10 years between them. Good age play.

I love reading ageplay books, I was really disappointed in this book.the whole book was just him spanking her. there was no chemistry between them. this book was not worth my time. if you want a good age play book there baby is great.

Everyone should read this book. Gives a interesting inside look into what was known over 10 years ago about the dangers of genetic engineering and how little has been done to protect consumers.

What she does in educating the world through her writings and her direct action in the world is fab. Plus she is a smart scientist and it's always nice when brilliant people are working hard to change the world to make it better. Once you learn it's hard to unlearn.

Informative and compelling

In this remarkable book, Vandana Shiva effectively contrasts corporate command-and-control methods of food production with the small farmer economy that predominates in the third world (especially in her native India). In contast to what many here in the U.S. might perceive as the conventional wisdom, Shiva makes a strong argument that local, small scale agriculture is superior to the agribusiness model for a number of reasons.
First, Shiva points out that many of the productivity gains attributable to the Green Revolution were achieved by dramatically increased inputs of fertilizer, seed and water. When one compares units of input with units of output, however, native practices produce higher yields -- especially when one takes into account the multiple uses derived from a single product.
For example, mustard oil is a vital product used by many of India's poor for cooking, seasoning, medicine and other uses. But it has been banned by the Indian government (under highly suspicious circumstances) in order to allow imports of soybean oil products. While giant corporations benefit from expanded sales, native industries have been destroyed, contibuting to poverty and malnourishment.
Shiva discusses the commercial fishing and aquaculture (shrimp farming) practices that inevitably result in environmental destruction and reduced catches. She compares this short-sighted approach with traditional Indian fishing techniques that have successfully sustained themselves for generations while protecting important ecosystems such as mangrove forests.
Shiva discusses corporate patenting of seeds, which insidiously transforms the cooperative ethic of seed sharing into a criminal offense. The author supports a non-cooperation movement in India that is resisting corporate attempts to claim ownership of seeds that have been cultivated by countless generations of farmers.
Shiva's sacred cow / mad cow metaphor effectively and appropriately contrasts agribusiness with small farming. India's sacred cows live in harmony with the environment, performing multiple services and producing multiple products for the community; whereas mad cows are a grotesque manifestation of an industrial system obsessed with uniformity, technology and profit.
Shiva also touches on the topic of genetic engineering (GE) and discusses the threat it poses to biodiversity, food safety and human health.
The Afterword to the book alludes to the WTO protests in Seattle. Shiva believes this watershed event proves that people are becoming more aware of the dangers of unaccountable corporate power, yet she believes that positive change is possible. This opening of consciousness to new possibilities may be attributable to the extraordinary work of people like Vandana Shiva, whose intelligence and compassion is abundantly evident in this book. Highly recommended!

The fifth edition of the venerable resource by Daniels, issued by Rowman and Littlefield (and formerly by Scarecrow) in their ‘Music Finders’ series, adds considerable content while updating and revising about one-third of entries from the previous edition. Formatting and layout is somewhat improved over the previous edition, making the text easier to scan. Dates of composition are now incorporated, and more detail has been added to the instrumentation formula. Twelve appendixes enable access from a variety of points, including instrumentation, composer anniversaries, and thematic programming. An ‘Orchestralogy’ section lists bibliographic and web resources for identifying orchestral music. The print content of the fourth edition is captured in the Orchestral Music Online website, available by subscription at http://orchestralmusic.com/. . . .The latest edition offers enough new content and updated legacy content to perhaps merit purchase of both versions for libraries and organizations that support orchestras and their programming. The 5th edition of this staple of music libraries has increased by one third in its number of pages, entries, and updates from the 4th edition, but its purpose and format remain basically unchanged. The work is an alphabetical listing by composer and work that includes information to help orchestras schedule rehearsals and plan concerts. . . .A gem of this work has always been the appendixes. Where else can one find programmable works that are under five minutes? One appendix will assist planners of tie-ins to local ethnic programming events, another to celebrate the significant anniversaries of composers through 2026, and yet another of works intended for young audiences. . . .Besides the obvious target audience of music librarians, conductors, and orchestra programmers, it will also be useful for critics, concertgoers, and music collectors. About the Author
David Daniels is Emeritus Professor of Music at Oakland University and Conductor Emeritus of the Warren Symphony, both in Michigan. He is coauthor with John Yaffé of Arias, Ensembles & Choruses (Scarecrow Press, 2012), and editor of two series of books: Music Finders, and Dictionaries for the Modern Musician. In 2016, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the College Orchestra Directors' Association.
