Old Yeller, by Fred Gipson

When a novel like Huckleberry Finn, or The Yearling, comes along it defies customary adjectives because of the intensity of the respouse it evokes in the reader. Such a book, we submit, is Old Yeller; to read this eloquently simple story of a boy and his dog in the Texas hill country is an unforgettable and deeply moving experience.

Review
"Occasionally, but very rarely, one reads a book with the increasing certainty, as one turns the pages, that a classic is unfolding before one's eyes."-- "Chicago Sunday tribune""Exciting and heartwarming indeed. Recommended for adults and teenagers."-- "Library Journal"

About the Author
With Old Yeller, Fred Gipson secured his place as one of the finest novelists in America. The book was published to instant acclaim and has become one of the most beloved children's classics ever written. Since its publication in 1956, Old Yeller has won countless awards, including the 1957 Newbery Honor. Mr. Gipson's other works include both fiction and non-fiction. He grew up in the Texas hill country and died in 1973.

From AudioFile
Actor Barry Corbin gives this classic story of an ugly, yellow stray dog a first-rate reading. Corbin's smooth, even-paced delivery and warm, friendly tone reflect the adventure, fun, and love shared by Old Yeller and 14-year-old Travis, and he thoughtfully communicates the heartbreak that comes when Travis must kill the loyal dog, who has been bitten by a rabid wolf. The abridgment is done well. The plot remains intact. What's missing is a small amount of the narrative that gives a strong sense of early frontier days in the Texas wilderness. This animal story is a good choice for families prepared to cry, as well as to laugh, together. C.R.A. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A MUST FOR YOUNG READERS!
By M. Grant
I'm a 7th grade teacher and I introduced my students to this novel for the first time this year. To my amazement they had never even heard of OLD YELLER. Now, middle school students can be the toughest audience in the world but THEY LOVED THIS BOOK.
Author Fred Gipson perfectly captures the time period of Texas in the late 1800's and the challenges of daily life. Into the mix of chores and adventures on the farm is the universal bond of a boy and his dog. Travis and Old Yeller are two characters that any child will immediately connect with and grow to love. And naturally as many novels geared towards younger readers, the conclusion will remain with them long after the novel has been read.
On a side note I must also recommend the classic Walt Disney version of OLD YELLER (VHS or DVD). Young readers will enjoy the similarities and differences between novel and movie. It's an excellent example to build discussion or writing lessons involving comparisons or contrasts.
And while I have continually mentioned young readers I should also comment that OLD YELLER is a must-read for people of any age group. So the next time you need to be entertained by a great novel, pick up this classic.

A good book; A sad, but good book
By A Customer
This heart-warming book is about Old Yeller, (Which mean 'Yellow' in those days) a stray golden-brown dog which Travis' little brother (Little Arliss)finds. Travis hates the dog, who they named 'Old Yeller', until Old Yeller saves Travis' life. Soon they are best buddies, but the fate that is awaiting at the end brings them apart. This book is perfect for ages 7 and up, and is a terrific day-to-day read. This has 16 exciting chapters for either read aloud or silent reading. If your lookin' for a book to read, It's Old Yeller.

Old Yeller
By A Customer
Old Yeller is the beautiful, touching story of a boy and his big "yeller" dog.

When Travis's father goes on a cattle drive, Travis takes over the farm. He takes on a big task and is furious to find a big, one-eared, yellow dog eats thier meat, plays in their drinking water, and runs away when his family is in dire need of help. But Old Yeller proves himself when he saves Travis's litttle brother, Arliss, from a mad mother bear.

I loved reading Old Yeller because the story became real. I love dogs and it was amazing how detailed the story was. It was touching to read about how close Travis and Old Yeller were brought together.

Old Yeller is a classic novel everyone can read. Fred Gipson tells about the love and loyalty the characters possess for one another. I highly recommend this touching story that filled me with emotion and made my day forever.

SuperCompetent is a Super Important Read!
By Eric Chester
I've grown weary and leery of time management books and productivity systems that promise long but deliver short when it comes to practical ideas, tools, and strategies for the overstressed, over-committed business owner or executive. But my wife bought Stack's latest book and layed it on my desk. I read it over a long weekend and it's already made a significant impact on how I structure my time, both personally and professionally.
I particularly enjoyed her advice on how to protect my time; an area I really struggle with. I also appreciated Stack's take on how to develop a sharper focus toward that which is truly important.
Whether you're just launching your career or you're knee-deep in the hoopla of trying to run a company in these insanely crazy times, you'll pull a great deal of actionable ideas from SuperCompetent. A must read!

There's a lot of fluff in this book
By Amazon Customer
This is definitely not a super-competent book. I bought it because of the glowing reviews, but that was a mistake on my part. The author no doubt has a thriving productivity consulting business, but this book definitely did NOT help me to improve my productivity.

The concept of the book seemed reasonable -- six characteristics of productive people. But I was surprised by the book contents. There was page after page after page of how to click around in Microsoft Outlook, or how to use various features for emails, meetings, planning, with general references to various websites, and so on. All pretty light stuff.

What struck me most was the large amount of text (fluff) devoted to each bullet point (many of which were merely descriptive of a situation, but not actionable in any real sense). I felt like someone brainstormed a bunch of points around a concept, and then just manufactured one or two big paragraphs (eg, a whole kindle page) talking about or around the point. I read and read and read, and could recognize (or imagine) the situations she was describing, but having understood the corporate situation she described, now what? If the author said anything much at all about the situation, it was obvious stuff.

I regret buying this book, but it's too late for me to return it to Amazon. Chalk it up to experience I guess. In contrast, if productivity is what you're after, I just finished Eat That Frog!, which is a productivity book as well. It costs about 1/4 of the SuperCompetent price, and is FAR more useful as a productivity enhancer. It contains many good productivity techniques, which are all concisely explained. No fluff in that book.

Another excellent book is How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life (Signet), probably the grandmaster time management and productivity book (although not available on Kindles, as far as I know).

Honestly, I would not recommend this SuperCompetent book to anyone. There are many far better productivity and time management books out there, for less money too.

Improve your life. This book gives you skills to reach your highest productivity.
By Tom Marcoux
Do you want to rise up to your best self and your highest productivity? This book can help you. On page 15, Author Laura Stack emphasizes that the "SuperCompetent know exactly why [they] work hard and what [they're] trying to achieve." On page 17, she emphasizes the power of having a "mission not an agenda . . . a mission keeps [one] from getting lost in the minutia." On page 97, she emphasizes that the SuperCompetent do not allow themselves to be distracted by various technological distractions (including Facebook, email, and YouTube.) She noted that the average American office worker loses 28% of the workday to distractions. This book is filled with strategies to improve your productivity. She even talks about how, during business travel, you can make the plane your mobile office. Laura provides action planning worksheets, and on page 209 she demonstrates the qualities of perseverance. This is a truly a helpful book.

This book really works!
By Scott Olson
I originally purchased this book in 1995 and used it several times for job interviews. I loaned it to several friends over the years, and I can honestly say that until the most recent economic downturn, it had a 100% success rate!

Unfortunately whoever I loaned it to last never returned it, so I had to buy another copy.

The tips are great, action steps make sense and going through the exercises in the book prepare you well for a successful hiring process. Highly recommended!

Tom Jackson books came out in the 1980s and early 1990s - there simply haven't been the type of guides that he has written since then. I was glad to have found them again, and they helped my recent interviews a lot!

Amazon.com Review
There must be dozens of books on how to draw comics, but even the best artists need to tell a good story. Who can teach them? Dennis O'Neil. A comics writer and editor for more than 20 years, O'Neil oversees DC Comics' Batman titles--one of the most successful comics franchises ever. In addition, he's a bestselling novelist, a screenwriter, and a writing teacher. So when it comes to storytelling, O'Neil knows his stuff. In this guide he delivers his knowledge in a succinct, no-nonsense style.

O'Neil explains three-act story structure and examines subplots, characterization, and methods for developing drama and suspense. He then applies these concepts to comics' specific forms: graphic novels, miniseries, maxiseries, and the rare megaseries (such as Batman: No Man's Land, a year-long über-narrative played out across five comics titles). As in good comics, words and images work together in this book. Every idea is illustrated by panels or pages from great moments in DC Comics lore. Especially illuminating are the script excerpts that come paired with the comic book pages they describe.

Strangely, the book ignores the visual side of comics writing. Modern comics scripts specify shots, angles, and blocking in movie-director fashion, but that craft is never addressed. (DC has a good opportunity here for a second volume.) However, what this book sets out to teach--storytelling--it does quite well. Aspiring comics writers won't just learn theory, they'll be empowered, because O'Neil provides a framework for crafting new tales. --J.B. Peck

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This witty, clear, and concise guide is tailored to those who want to create comics. O'Neil is adamant that there is no One True Way, although he stresses the importance of practice. He discusses story structure, characterization, script preparation, and other general writing topics. He also covers those more specific to comics writing such as miniseries, maxiseries, and continuity. O'Neil addresses the visual component of the art, the importance of page layout, and the relationship between the writer and the artist. He concludes with a short essay, "Writing Humor Comics," by Mark Evanier. The book is lavishly illustrated with black-and-white examples from various DC comics. In addition, the author includes many pages of scripts, which are usually juxtaposed with the finished page. He provides excellent advice and guidance for beginners. Although the examples focus on DC characters and stories, the content should have broad appeal. This is a nice balance to the many how-to-draw-comics books in most collections. Even for nonwriters, the book is interesting for the background look it provides into how comics are created.

From Booklist
O'Neil has been scripting comics professionally for nearly two generations, and he offers much good sense and valuable information about his craft. Although an ex-Marvelite endorsed in a foreword by Stan Lee himself, O'Neil's principal experience has been with DC, for whom he started with Batman and Superman and proceeded to most of the other titles in the company's catalog. He provides everything from a basic glossary, complete with visual examples, of scripting concepts to advice on characterization--something vulgarly and erroneously supposed not to exist in comics--to guidance on work habits and concludes by discussing the various kinds of comic books, broadly conceived. He exemplifies from DC's stable, which may make the book enticing to even the fan who isn't particularly interested in becoming a scripter. But above all, O'Neil addresses the universals of writing in a way that makes the book useful to all aspiring scripters, regardless of their knowledge of comics. Roland Green

Dylan: The Biography, by Dennis McDougal

The ultimate biography of the musical icon.

A groundbreaking and vibrant look at the music hero to generations, DYLAN: The Biography digs deep into Bob Dylan lore―including subjects Dylan himself left out of Chronicles: Volume One.

DYLAN: The Biography focuses on why this beloved artist has touched so many souls―and on how both Dylan and his audience have changed along the way.

Bob Dylan is an international bestselling artist, a Pulitzer Prize–winning author, and an Oscar winner for "Things Have Changed." His career is stronger and more influential than ever. How did this happen, given the road to oblivion he seemed to choose more than two decades ago? What transformed a heroin addict into one of the most astonishing literary and musical icons in American history?

At 72 years of age, Dylan's final act of his career is more intriguing than ever―and classic biographies like Bob Dylan: Behind the Shades and even his own Chronicles: Volume One came too soon to cover this remarkable new chapter in Dylan's life.

Through extensive interviews and conversations with Dylan's friends, family, sidemen, and fans, Los Angeles Times journalist Dennis McDougal crafts an unprecedented understanding of Dylan and the intricate story behind the myths. Was his romantic life, especially with Sara Dylan, much more complicated than it appears? Was his motorcycle accident a cover for drug rehab? What really happened to Dylan when his career crumbled, and how did he find his way back? To what does he attribute his astonishing success? McDougal's meticulous research and comprehensive interviews offer a revealing new understanding of these long-standing questions―and of the current chapter Dylan continually writes in his life and career.

Review

From Publishers Weekly

The legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan matures from “feckless, foolish poseur” to calculating, canny poseur in this gleefully acid-etched biography. New York Times scribe McDougal (The Last Mogul) chronicles Dylan’s project of “‘building a character that will sell’” by transforming himself from a middle-class Jewish boy with nice parents in Minnesota into an ersatz orphaned carnie and hallucinatory folk-rock oracle (and later into a country-western balladeer and born-again Christian). Along the way, he argues, Dylan stole the personas and stylings of other entertainers, and plagiarized tunes, words, and paintings (sometimes copyrighting them as originals). Amid makeovers and appropriations, the truly authentic constants of Dylan’s character in this critical portrait are a hard-nosed drive to succeed, self-centered betrayals of intimates, incessant misrepresentations and voracious appetites for booze, drugs, and women. McDougal eschews gushing exegeses of lyrics and other staples of Dylanolatry; while he acknowledges a body of great music and perceptively analyzes its resonance, he’s happier tossing jibes. (“A tale told by an idiot-savant on PCP” is his review of Dylan’s novel Tarantulas.) Few of his revelations are novel, but McDougal presents his caustic indictment with energy and panache. [em](May) [/em]

From Kirkus Reviews

The biographer of Lew Wasserman, Jack Nicholson and Otis Chandler returns with a sometimes-scholarly, sometimes-snarky life of the songwriting and singing legend.

McDougal leaves few doubts about his seriousness in this long account of Robert Zimmerman, who grew up in the small town of Hibbing, Minn. Many pages feature footnotes, some of which are substantial, others adding but a dollop of color. The author’s admiration for Dylan’s artistic accomplishments is patent―in the preface, he compares him with Shakespeare, Twain and Dickens―though he does not hesitate to blast Dylan for shoddy performances, weak records, personal coldness (even cruelty), drug and alcohol abuse, and a serial sex life that would make Casanova’s grave glow green. McDougal’s work is starkly traditional: He begins with family background and marches steadily forward in 4/4 time, showing how this small-town kid went to New York City and eventually owned it to the core. It was “Blowin’ in the Wind,” writes the author, that shot him to fame, distancing him from the many other wannabes in Greenwich Village, but Dylan later abandoned protest songs (and, soon, his acoustic guitar) and spent the next decades in a continual reinvention―of his music and his persona. But patterns emerged: He eventually wore out even the most indulgent of wives; he abruptly dropped business acquaintances and fellow musicians; he wished always to have the spotlight on him; he “borrowed” lyrics and images for his paintings; and he remained intensely private, probably realizing that too much exposure would remove the “mystery.” McDougal offers engaging details about the major records, as well as Dylan’s books and films. He even finds some good things to say about Dylan’s dreadful performance in Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

Richly detailed, though the author places Dylan on a higher shelf in the cultural library than history may permit.

Praise for Five Easy Decades: How Jack Nicholson Became the Biggest Movie Star in Modern Times

"Dennis McDougal is a rare Hollywood reporter: honest, fearless, nobody's fool. This is unvarnished Jack for Jack-lovers and Jack-skeptics but, also, for anyone interested in the state of American culture and celebrity. I always read Mr. McDougal for pointers." —Patrick McGilligan, author of Jack's Life and Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light

Praise for Privileged Son: Otis Chandler and the Rise and Fall of the L.A. Times Dynasty

"A great freeway pileup--part biography, part dysfunctional family chronicle, and part institutional and urban history, with generous dollops of scandal and gossip." —Hendrick Hertzberg, The New Yorker

"McDougal has managed to scale the high walls that have long protected the Chandler clan and returned with wicked tales told by angry ex-wives and jealous siblings." —The Washington Post

Praise for The Last Mogul: Lew Wasserman, MCA and the Hidden History of Hollywood

"Real glamour needs a dark side. That is part of the fascination of Dennis McDougal's wonderful book." —The Economist

"Thoroughly reported and engrossing . . . the most noteworthy trait of MCA was how it hid its power." —The New York Times Book Review

"Over the years, I've read hundreds of books on Hollywood and the movie business, and this one is right at the top." —Michael Blowen, The Boston Globe

"Whether you agree or disagree with the author, you will likely never read a book as purely entertaining about Dylan." ―Tom Waldman, nohoartsdistrict.com

A deeply insightful, wildly entertaining eye-opener
By Lee G
This is not the first biography of Bob Dylan but it is quite likely to be the last. Surely we'll see more works focusing narrowly on specific facets of the superstar's life, or, in the grand but dubious tradition of Dylanology, parsing to death his endlessly confounding (and sometimes utterly nonsensical lyrics), but it's hard to imagine any further need to examine the totality of the man's life now that Dennis McDougal's Dylan has entered the canon. Exhaustively researched, much of it from primary sources, Dylan is not a rehash of prior works but a freshly considered, de novo examination of one of the towering figures of American musical culture. And while McDougal certainly adopts a point of view, he clearly is not pushing an agenda for which he cherry-picked evidence but appears to have developed his understandings as he processed the information he unearthed. This "telling it like it is" feel permeates the book and leaves us feeling that McDougal's work is destined to be canonical.

But let me not give the impression that Dylan is a scholarly tome to be slogged through. To the contrary, the book is a fast-paced, ever-fascinating roller-coaster romp not just through a life but through an era. Dylan's musical evolution sometimes reflects, sometime refracts and often leads the evolution of music over the last half century. Iconic figures we grew up with wafted in and out of his life, "out" being especially relevant since he left a horde of discarded friends and acquaintances in the dust of his towering and unapologetic, even gleeful, contempt. That Dylan made full use of celebrity license to be a nasty sonofabitch is only one of the inescapable conclusions to be drawn from this book.

Part of the author's brilliance is in being able to effortless juggle seemingly contradictory ideas, in much the same way that he describes Dylan as doing. McDougal is transparently admiring of Dylan's musical genius even as he demonstrates that some portion of the work derives directly from that of others. (Not outright plagiarism, necessarily, but more towards what Shakespeare meant when he called himself "a borrower of the trifles of others.") Dylan sees no troubling contradiction in sneering at commercial striving while he himself aggressively pursues the accumulation of wealth, with the rationalization that it's okay for a singer-songwriter to sell records, but not Coca-Cola. There's also no reticence about pointing out that, like many geniuses in a variety of fields of human endeavor, Dylan put out a lot of junk along with the gems.

For anyone who might be thinking that you need to be a Dylan fan to enjoy this book, let me tell you, you don't. And if, like I, you've always enjoyed the man's music but couldn't have cared less about his life, this book will change your mind. I can't remember ever using "biography" and "page-turner" in the same sentence but Dylan had me riveted from the first chapter. The only times I paused were when I reached for the headset to re-hear his vintage songs, this time knowing the context in which they were written and recorded. What a revelation.

The Same Old Story From Another Point Of View
By Alias
Having just completed the Kindle version of this book I couldn't help but think throughout my reading that I've heard and read most of this before. If you've ever read other Dylan biographies, Chronicles, interviews or keep up with Dylan on expectingrain.com, etc. then there won't be too many surprises for you coming from McDougal's research and perspective. Sure, he does share a few new detailed tidbits from behind the scenes concerning Dylan's women, friends and family, albums, personal life, management team, money and investments, but for the most part I'd say that about 75% of this book has already been told before. Not too many surprises and Dylan still remains elusive and private even for MdDougal. Now having said that, if you're new to Dylan or don't know much about his life and want to know more then I'd give this book a five-star rating and say that it's a must read, one of the best as far as other Dylan biographies go and there would be no reason to read any other biography of Dylan.
