About the Author

Mike Nash is one the world's leading experts on hypnosis. He is a prolific researcher and clinical educator, who also maintains an active clinical practice. He is Professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee, and is Editor Emeritus of The International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, the world's premiere venue for scientific and applied hypnosis. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1983 and completed his clinical internship at Yale University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry in the same year. He has published two books, one on the research foundations of hypnosis and another on integrating hypnosis into clinical practice. He is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology (ABPP), and is the recipient of 18 national and international awards for his scientific, clinical, and teachng accomplishments. Amanda Barnier is an Associate Professor and Australian Research Council (ARC) Australian Research Fellow in the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Amanda began her career in Psychology at Macquarie University, graduating in 1991 with a BA(Hons). She completed a PhD in Psychology (1996) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and postdoctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley. Amanda then returned to Australia and UNSW as an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow and later as an ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellow. She returned to Macquarie University in 2007.

The area of hypnosis is fascinating but, alas, until now books about it were either solely from a traditional hypnosis perspective or, at the other extreme, solely Eriksonian. This book offers an understanding of everything about hypnosis and backed by university research

Not a light read but certainly a very informative one. Packed with studies and conclusions, much of which is contradictory but that is the nature of hypnosis. A book well worth the expense and effort.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt!

This is one of those warm-and-fuzzy feel good books. Why? Because once you understand the concepts and core principles of Profit First, you realize that perhaps you weren't doing it right. Then you realize that from this very moment forward (or at least the moment you finish Chapter 4 - "Choose Your Own Adventure") that you most certainly can attain financial freedom. You'll stop working like a slave to your business, and you'll feel better working with your customers.

I actually picked up the hardback version first (because I love making notes) and then got turned onto the Audible.com version, which is narrated by and includes extra commentary by the author, Mike Michalowicz. If you've never heard Mike speak, he has tremendous energy and sincerity that meshes quite well with his own brand of humor. It can be useful to follow along while he reads, making notes along the way. I did the same with one of his other books, The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field.

Following Mike for the past three years, I've known about the Profit First system for a while. I implemented a half-arse version of it late last year, surprising with success. Why? Because I (unknowingly) used the concept of 'removing temptation' by keeping my Profit account hidden from my other accounts. I can't lie, I have some bias (and love) for Profit First because it worked. I also befriended Mike over a beer on the rooftop of the CreativeLive San Francisco studio, which in turn led to me being able to preview this book.

Why am I telling you this? Simple. Three months ago I learned the other pieces of the jigsaw puzzle while reading it. I put Profit First to work for real, and I've seen nothing but positives in my business and personal finances (yes, it works there too - and is discussed in the latter part of the book). For the first time in five years, I made a quarterly tax payment, on time. And I did it without sweating bullets, crapping my pants, and trying to figure out where the money would come from. Thanks to Profit First, I already had that money set aside - again in a hidden account that I only need to access four times a year. Then I took my profit distribution, and I bought myself something nice. Meanwhile, my business kept on doing what it does best.

Look, I could go on forever telling you what rocks about this book. And no, it's not Def Leppard (that's The Pumpkin Plan), but that's about the only thing missing. Grab whatever your flavor - sexy hardback, cyber Kindle, or soothing Audible - just make sure you grab it. This book will make you profitable, which will grow your business, which will ultimately make you happy and be able to answer the question "How healthy is your business?" with a wide, toothy grin from ear-to-ear on your face.

I couldn't review this book any other way than positively... especially since I've been involved in one way or another for the entire process of creating the book from concept testing - I read earlier articles about Profit First in the Wall Street Journal and on Mike's blog, in his 2nd book The Pumpkin Plan, and was there in the CreativeLive studios when the concept literally exploded in the brains of hundreds (or possibly thousands) of live, online business owners participating in the 2-day live Pumpkin Plan Workshop recording. (It's still available for purchase, but even better Mike will be back again at CL for Profit First in August!).

When I started my business 5 years ago, I spent A LOT of money on business books about how to be a consultant, how to launch a startup, how to run a green business, how to become your business brand... and most of them are still unread because they're just too much information and overwhelming even to read.

I can honestly say I don't think I bought ANY books on small business accounting or how to be profitable... I just believed the rule of thumb (that may have been true at the time but isn't anymore) - plan on 3-5 years before your startup business is profitable.

So for my accounting, I just did the best I could, and tried to make sure I could pay my bills when business was lean, and was able to spend more when my business was flush, happily tricking myself into believing I was running a "profitable", healthy business, that from the outside looked like it was growing. But I was in denial.

Most of the time, when people are in denial about something so sensitive as their business or money, the process of resolving the irrational fears and embracing REALITY is a personal process that can be extremely painful (impacting personal lives), and takes a long time to rehabilitate both the business and owner, to get to the good times.

The good thing about Profit First is that it's like the first time you visit the pain-free dentist and he really IS!

When you read this book, you'll see that becoming permanently profitable in business is as simple and easy as making the change in your brain to manage your business and $$ allocations by taking your profit FIRST, and budgeting for expenses LAST, after you've already allocated salaries & taxes.

Mike delivers the message in an easy to read, entertaining way, with lots of personal stories shared (including my own, about the moment I realized I'd been fooling myself all these years, a slave to my business). Within just a few hours of reading, I am sure you'll have the entire simple concept and system and be ready to become profitable today!

I sincerely hope you'll pick up a copy for yourself and one for every entrepreneur (and accountant!) who you care about.

You won't Profit First until you read this!

I have been a fan of the author Mike Michalowicz, author of The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, and most recently, The Pumpkin Plan. Mike is the quintessential entrepreneur and his first two books for have been a true inspiration for me as I navigate the often turbulent waters of small business ownership. I am not complaining, when I opened my latest company in the summer of 2009, arguably the WORST time for a start-up (especially if you wanted any bank financing), Mike's Toilet Paper Entrepreneur was the inspiration to keep me trudging along, "paycheckless", getting up every morning with a smile on my face knowing that I was building something.
Then came The Pumpkin Plan. Just what my business needed after struggling through the worst economy in decades and waking up to realize that the doors were still open and the lights were still on. Through that book I learned the art of nurturing your best customers and releasing the worst. A valuable concept that I certainly should have been able to figure out myself. . .but I didn't. Mike did, and I followed his formula and my business is now much better because of it.
My problem is, I am an entrepreneur. I'm not an accountant, I'm not a banker. I'm an entrepreneur. When I saw Michael come out with his latest book called Profit First I thought. .WHATTTT??? Profit first. How novel! I had another "ahh haa" moment; Why didn't I think of that. Well, once again, after getting a complimentary first 5 chapters, I can say "Don't miss this one!" I think Mike has outdone himself this time. He not only talks about accounting in a language that non-accountant can understand, but he makes me want to give this book to MY accountant and say. . "Learn this!" "Help me make this happen for me!"
Do don't waste your time hemming and hawing over whether or not to get this book. There are tons of business books on the market and I have read most. This book is well worth your investment of the minimal cost and the time you will spend enjoying it! If you are an entrepreneur, or THINK you are, then this is a MUST READ. My favorite thing is "MIKE ISN'T TRYING TO UPSELL YOU ANYTHING! So many authors give you just enough information to get you to buy their "plan." Not Mike. This is the real deal! In fact, you would do your fellow entrepreneurs a HUGE favor by purchasing a copy for them as a gift! They will thank you a 100 times over! Happy reading, and happy profit!

This is truely the best SMing book I've read

Talk to almost any professsional SM and they will recomend you read this book. It covers every area of the rehearsal process with a notation system beyond any other. Her prompt book layout is extreamly advanced and not needed for smaller theatres but a great thing to know about. The best part of her book is her list of what to do for the entire production process. It lists everything with forms in the appendix to use also. Overall a great book, no matter what leval of stage management you're at.

Highly recommend

This book goes over all aspects of basic ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, assuming a basic statistics background. Gordon uses Stata as her software of choice, but includes an appendix of translating commands across SPSS, SAS, and Stata for users of those other programs. Unlike some other statistics books that I have used as a graduate student in the social sciences, this book combines both software commands and actual theory to teach you not only how to execute a regression, but also to fundamentally understand where these coefficients come from and how to interpret them. Gordon covers bivariate and multivariate regression, dummy variables, interactions, nonlinearity, and regression assumptions as well as a basic introduction to Stata.

This book requires no previous knowledge of Stata or regression, and so is a great book for beginners looking to sink their teeth into something. Gordon does include some basic proofs, which some students may find confusing, but it is often clear that the student should understand the underlying principle instead of the algebraic proof.

This book does NOT cover over forms of regression (logit, probit, etc.), so just be aware.

The most helpful book I've found yet to help me remember Spanish verb meanings and conjugations.

Great book for anyone having trouble remembering Spanish verbs and their forms. Along with the pictures and key words to help you remember, there are exercises with each word to test yourself. Plus, at the end of the book there are numerous explanations about conjugating the Spanish verbs.

cute but iffy on the practicality

i bought this for my Spanish classroom thinking that mnemonic devices are helpful and fun for my students but the book includes some tricks that are great while others are too much of a stretch to be helpful. in retrospect, an entire book of mnemonic devices didn't really meet the needs of my Spanish 1 students. my favorite feature is the model sentences (where students fill in the blanks) and the charts that display the verb conjugated in both the present tense and preterit tense.

Cute book, good for beginner students

I purchased this book to help me teach verbs to a Spanish I class. So far, they do recall many of the mnemonic phrases especially the rhyming ones (e.g. Boone leaves the saloon), although the book does not contain as many verbs as I would like, and does nothing to help remember stem-changing verbs (besides listing the conjugations below the cartoon).
Even so, it's a good study aid and we have been using it whenever new verbs come up that are included in this book.

Raising kids

I read this book in 1976. I worked at B Dalton's headquarters in Bloomington and borrowed this book from the buyer's shelf at night when I worked third shift. It was so fascinating to me that my recollection is very vivid.

Aaron Stern is a Jewish survivor of WWII, although he suffered from lung and heart conditions from his time living in the forests. He was a professor of language (knew 7 languages) who taught children in displaced persons camps using travel posters - the only things available. In this book he writes of how he spent time with his young daughter in NYC, teaching her to read in grocery stores. They made museum trips on Sunday and talked about everything they saw from the time they left home until they returned. He emphasized how he always asked open-ended questions and asked his daughter to do research.

His daughter was admitted to the Univ of Michigan (as I recall) at age 16. It's a fascinating story about how to teach at every opportunity with very little.

I've been searching for this book, but I see only two copies on the internet. One at $145 (autographed) and the other at $939. Amazing!

Stern accomplished this feat while leaving on a meager income: his disability made him unable to find employment and his wife worked as a department store clerk.

The drawbacks: his total focus on his daughter apparently strained the relationship between Edith and her mother. A South Florida newspaper reported that he and his daughter were not speaking toward the end of his life. Parents beware: if you want to make your child a genius, the price may be too high.

I read this book when I was about 8 or ...

I read this book when I was about 8 or 10 years old and it has haunted me ever since. I hope I can find another copy of it sometime (but not for an exhorbitant price!) so I can revisit it as an adult and see how my conceptualization of what he wrote about has changed. As a child, I felt alternating pangs of jealousy and vindication. I was jealous at how much his daughter learned and accomplished. I felt vindicated by the lack of ease with which she lived her life. Stern's approach to parenting is not unlike Skinner's raising his daughter in a box. Both raised their children (without their consent, of course) in extreme conditions that beg the question of abuse and neglect.

This read was very insightful and broke down so much of the complicated information you deal with more often on the internet. In a time were privacy is obsolete, now we're discovering there are ways to get some of our privacy back while online. I have never heard of TOR (The Onion Router) until I checked out this book.I didn't know what an Onion Router was, but it makes sense when the FBI and major companies have peeled back the layers of people's lives. This read is filled with information that can help you protect yourself online and can sometimes be a bit overwhelming because of the wealth of info. There are a lot of topics to cover and some of the info. I had to go over twice because some of it went over my head! It is quite worth the read with nothing to lose since it is free during this time. Even after the price increases, thiis book is for long-term and can come in handy.

Tor and The Dark Net has been a technical read for me. I got lost in some of the things here. But reading deeper, I find this book helpful. It has given so many points on how one can be safe while using the internet. Its discussions on how one can remain anonymous while roaming the online world had been very clear and distinct. One will see that this book is a product of a good and thorough research. It is in this book that I get to understand more about Tor, VPN's, and PGP. And its attempt to help readers set up is also remarkable. I think that this book must be read and appreciated and learned from by readers who are frequently online.

This book covers Tor in general and the Tor browser, and what you can realistically expect in terms of privacy and anonymity. The book details the Tor concept and how you can use it. I thought I knew about Tor and the Tor browser but this book showed me I only knew 10% to 20% of how to effectively use Tor. The Tor browser is a start, but trying to configure it like other browsers (like I was with add-ons & plug-ins) will actually decrease the privacy you thought you were gaining by using Tor. If you are new to Tor or even moderately familiar with Tor this is the book for you.

A Grand Tour of Mechanics - You'll See the Sights but Might Not Learn the Language

Until you've looked over some of the more advanced solid mechanics texts such as Marsden and Hughes, Love, or Timoshenko, you won't understand the virtues of this book. Likewise, without a cursory knowledge of FEM, you understand the main thrust of this book, which is to teach the student just enough sold/structural mechanics and mathematics that they can approximate the solution using the Ritz method.

The author covers quite a bit of ground in a small amount of space: tensors, tensor calculus, kinematics, equilibrium, constitutive laws, boundary value problems, the Ritz method, beams, plates, energy methods, stability, and nonlinear solution techniques. Dr. Hjelmstad introduces these topics to the reader with lucid prose, and he always gives a physical, logical, or practical justification for the mathematical gymnastics to come. By concentrating on the big ideas, the reader does not drown an abyss of algebra. The author's clear, direct style is perhaps the most attractive feature for students new to solid mechanics, but because so much is covered in this book, the advanced student will find ideas expanded in later books but in context here.

These are the main virtues of the book - it is also the main vice, because the practical step of solving solid mechanics problems is neglected. There are a few dozen solved examples in the book and a few hundred unsolved problems for the student. Without access to someone who knows how to solve these problems, the abstractions and techniques of the book are almost impossible to grasp. It would be a crime to interrupt the flow of the book, but an appendix with solution techniques, methods, and more worked problems for each chapter would be a major improvement as the book doesn't even include answers to selected problems. I have a few other minor gripes: the index isn't nearly long enough; too much time is spent on Timoshenko beams and not enough on Bernoulli-Euler beams (especially regarding boundary conditions), and small strain linear elasticity is stressed almost exclusively.

If you're a beginning student in structural mechanics looking for something more than Mohr's Circle and know someone to assist you in solving the problems, this is an excellent choice. If you want to know the very basic foundation of the computational structural mechanics, you'll want to read this book. If you want to know how to solve these problems, then you probably need to look elsewhere.

A great book.

Disregard the two negative reviewers: They should go back to the Mohr's Circle and run around it naked with their thumbs in their mouths. If you really desire to learn the stuff, this is a great book. The author has a unique perspective on teaching mechanics. It is written with flair and finesse; its playful narrative is a rarity in books written on the same topic. It serves as an excellent introduction to continuum mechanics, and finite element methods, and I believe, it fills a previously unoccupied niche-a modern and streamlined treatment of the Fundamentals of Structural Mechanics-rather gracefully.

For those who want a book for introductionary mechanics, go elsewhere. As the other reviewer said, this book is not about Mohr's Circle. This book lays a strong foundation for the study of finite element methods in solid mechanics and to other areas of numerical analysis of solid mechanics. The narrative is clear and in just enough detail to keep the student interested. Over complication of the subject matter and drag are avoided by, for instance, avoiding inclusions of simple derivations that can be performed by the reader himself, should he understand the previous chapters.
I am hope Dr.Hjelmstad admits only advanced undergrads and grad students to his course based on this book. It is sure to go way above the heads of lesser students.
